Both bombs were so devastating, that the Japanese surrendered on August 15, 1945 and signed the Instrument of Surrender on September 2, 1945. In Hiroshima almost 70,000 people died instantly and in Nagasaki between 40,000 to 75,000 died instantly. Many of the Japanese that didn't die immediately from the bombings, usually died soon after or eventually developed leukemia or a type of cancer from the radiation. Over the next few months 90,000-166,000 people died in Hiroshima and 60,000-80,000 died in Nagasaki.
